Despite the cultural and political turmoil of the Balkan states over the past century, Slovenia has maintained a particularly successful wine industry since the country gained independence from former Yugoslavia in 1991. One of the ways they have achieved this is through cooperative wineries, where many growers will work together to have their grapes made to wine. Sometimes from as many as 300 to 400 families, and give them all a stake in the wines rather than just selling their fruit to an anonymous beverage company. Krasno wines is the result of one such cooperative, and make some of the best wines being exported from Slovenia to America. The Krasno wines are from the steep and sunny terraces of the Krasno village, cultivated according to principles of sustainability before arriving at the Klet Brda Winery for production.
