Here's a little known fact: Vermouth used to be relatively popular in Jerez, before falling out of favor in the 1970s. Well, it's back in a big way, as Vermouth is once again a cool drink among younger folks in Spain and elsewhere. Rey Fernando de Castilla is a leading producer of artisanal sherry, so not surprisingly this vermouth consists of sherry as a base (70% dry oloroso produced from Palomino grapes, and 30% PX).
With an average age of 8 years for the base wine, this is a rich and complex style of sweet vermouth, a true original to enjoy over ice, or perhaps in a distinctly Andaluz take on a Manhattan (maybe re-name it a Madrid?). A great product and cool vermouth to add to your rotation.
