Broadbent Madeira was inspired by Bartholomew Broadbent’s father, Michael Broadbent, who called Madeira his “desert island wine." Bartholomew spent more than a decade reintroducing Madeira to the U.S. market.
The Rainwater came to be via urban legend! The Broadbents like to believe the magic of the story: a shipment was left on a dock in Savannah, GA, and the barrels absorbed the rain. This created a 'diluted' style that the family fell in love with. It's amazing as an aperitif over ice or as a cocktail with tonic and a twist of lemon. Notes of light toffee and citrus with lovely acidity.
Madeira is a region in Portugal AND the namesake wine. It's one of the few wines that hasn't changed much since it became popular 300 years ago. Madeira is a forified wine that can be dry to sweet. It gets its name from the small island in the middle of the Atlanta Ocean. The classic taste comes from repeatedly heating the wine, creating notes of roastes nuts, caramel and toffee.
Fun fact: the Madeira used for cooking isn't a true Madeira! Look for "finest" or "rainwater" on the label for a true Madeira.
