Join us for an exploratory journey through some of the world's Alpine wine regions!
High-altitude regions with significant temperature variations create challenges for producing distinctive wines from lesser-known grape varieties. The Alps stretch across eight countries, with viticulture areas mainly in France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. These wines are noted for their minerality, with whites having savory, coastal finishes and reds offering structure without excessive plushness, often with lower alcohol content.
Despite a winemaking history of over 2,500 years, economic struggles have hindered infrastructure, limiting distribution and tourism. Additionally, issues like frost, mold, and steep slopes contribute to low yields. Initially, winemakers prioritized quantity for local ski resorts, but a shift towards quality has emerged with an emphasis on handcrafted, family-owned wineries focusing on organic and biodynamic practices, leading to more exciting wines.
