Mother Rock Wines was founded in 2012 by winemaker Johan “Stompie” Meyer and Ben Henshaw with a goal of producing honest, affordable wines that express South Africa’s Swartland region with as little manipulation as possible. Meyer became sole owner of the project in 2022 and continues to farm and make wine with his wife, Anri, while championing cooler vineyard sites throughout the region. Force Celeste is the more playful, immediately approachable side of Mother Rock, but the farming and winemaking remain serious.
Cinsault has deep roots in South Africa for its ability to thrive in the country’s warm, dry conditions. This Cinsault comes from 26-year-old bush vines planted at roughly 280 meters elevation in weathered granite and clay soils. The grapes are hand-harvested, chilled, and carefully sorted before whole-cluster fermentation with stems and native yeasts. The wine matures for eight months in a combination of concrete tanks and large oak foudres before being bottled without fining or filtration.
