So, Sicily is home to Mt. Etna, and yes, it is an active volcano. On the eastern side of that volcano is a dormant crater about 700 meters up, made up of crushed, dried lava and other things that spew from an angry, fiery cone. Soils rich in minerals and vines 20-25 years old grow these almost blue skinned grapes in the ‘lenza di munti’, or the ‘slice of the mountain’.
The nose is rich and lush with perfumed violets, roses and candied fruit. The weight of this wine is crunchy and light, asking for a chill, but full of bright cherry, blackberry and granite, leading to a very dry finish. If you’ve been searching for a daytime red, you’ve found it.
