Scott Schultz is the driving force behind Jolie-Laide. The name is meant to be a reflection of his winemaking style: Jolie-Laide translates to “Pretty-Ugly” in French. Schultz uses a totally natural process, letting the wines exist in their purest form. They’re a little weird, a little rough around the edges and wild – just as they should be. He keeps it all very small production and only works with the most trusted vineyards.
This blend is inspired by the red wines of the French Alps. It’s sourced from risk-taking vineyards in Northern California, and features some unique and rare varieties: Trousseau Noir imparts flavors of pomegranate and raspberry. Cabernet Pfeffer, (which was historically mistaken for Trousseau) reveals distinct fresh black pepper and rose hip aromas. Gamay adds bright, red-fruited notes, and the Poulsard contributes lively acidity. All grapes were fermented in tank and aged in neutral oak barrels separately, partially carbonic for brightness and all whole cluster adding to the complex spice aromas with delicate lean, and mineral-driven qualities. We think this surprising blend is perfect on its own, but would pair beautifully with sausage and onions, like Diots au Vin Blanc.
