Indigenous to Southwestern France, Gros Manseng is a thick-skinned, wild grape typically used for blending and not much else. To get the best out of this “difficult” grape, Uva Non Grata (one of our favorite value French lines) makes two wines and blends them together: a bright and zingy wine fermented to dryness that then gets blended with a smaller proportion of late harvest fruit, bringing with it a delightful juiciness and exotic spice. This “loud and proud” Gros Manseng proves the grape should no longer be relegated to the backseat of other blends.
The nose starts with mellow pink grapefruit and apple that move into the palate and mingle with notes of vanilla and honey. The finish is long and spiced with pepper and a bit of smoke.
