‘Ponzichter’ was a name meaning ‘bean eaters’ that the Hungarians called the German-speaking minority of winegrowers in the Sopron region. They grew vegetables (mainly beans) between the wine rows. This piqued the interest of winemaker Franz Weninger as it’s an important part of biodynamic production AND a good source of food at least if there was a bad vintage of wine that year. Franz is incredibly dedicated to the land he farms, a lesson he learned from his father. Franz Jr has taken it to another level, converting the estate to biodynamics and replanting many sites with the appropriate traditional varietals.
