Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Counoise
“…a vintage that naturally delivers the kind of fresh, elegant wines that this estate is famous for…a wine with natural, easy balance. The Mourvèdre is excellent here this year, and adds great depth to the fresh and delightful Grenache that has notes of black tea, black cherry and iron. Elegant and very fine.“ - 98 points Decanter
“Beguiling, with a plume of black tea and incense leading off, followed by warmed black cherry reduction, cassis, melted black licorice, warm earth and singed tobacco and garrigue accents. Offers breadth and depth with a seamless feel, capped by a subtle mineral edge that lingers lengthily amid the beautiful fruit.”
The blend is only 45% Grenache this year, thanks to the variety’s susceptibility to mildew. The resulting wine has a dark red berry profile with fennel and white pepper spice. It’s poised, despite the wine’s concentration, garrigue aromas combining with liquorice and black cherries. There’s a silkiness to the palate; the fine-grained tannins feeling incredibly well-integrated, even in the wine’s youth. The finish is generously long. Drink 2022-2040+. -97 points Wine Spectator
A father-and-son team, Paul and Vincent Avril run the firm and are already established as one of the very finest wine making-partnerships in the southern Rhône. The domaine's situation is not helped by having plots of vines scattered throughout the area, but this does mean that they can spread the length of harvesting over a longer period of time and get the very best from each of their sites.
