Caves Sao Joao was established in 1920 and became a dominant force in Portuguese wine. They eventually fell into obscurity with shifts in consumer preferences that saw demand for bigger, more extracted and warmer climate wines. In 2013 the Costa family, owners of the estate, re-opened their cellars and began making vintages from 1959-2000 available to the public again. Wines that were vegetal with more pronounced tannins and high acidity in their youth aged gracefully when kept in perfect conditions in the winery for 20-40 years. They're now pristine examples of complex, beautifully finessed mature wines.
