Il Faggio is made by Alana McGettigan, at one of the region’s best co-operatives in the northern part of Abruzzi. The aim is to capture in the bottle the power and intensity of the grape, together with a lift and freshness which is seldom found in wines from this area. The name Il Faggio derives from the fabulous beech trees which proliferate in this area, especially in the Abruzzo national park. Abruzzo is an Italian region, east of Rome, with an Adriatic coastline and the Apennine Mountains. National parks and nature reserves cover much of its rugged interior. It also encompasses hilltop towns, dating to the medieval and Renaissance periods. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel to retain purity of fruit character. McGettigan is originally from New Zealand and has experience making wine in France as well. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is often considered a “rustic” grape, known for being a deeply colored wine with pepper and spice notes. It can be highly aromatic with earthy notes, blackberries, solid tannins and lower acidity.

This is a very fruit forward wine with cherry, raspberry, pepper and vanilla aromas. Charming and delicious. Imagine a roasted rack of lamb with mint pesto on a special day with family and friends! It’s also great with grilled meats, strong cheese and anything Italian.
