Domaine Jean Vesselle is located in Bouzy, a small village in the Champagne region known for its Pinot Noir. It is located at the southern end of the Montagne de Reims. Bouzy is one of the oldest Grand Cru in the region. The Domaine’s vineyards include 16 hectares planted mostly to Pinot Noir, and a bit of Chardonnay planted in an area with lots of limestone.
Delphine Vesselle has been making the wines at Domaine Jean Vesselle since 1993. Though the estate had been passed down, father to son for more than three centuries, it was Delphine the youngest of three children that took the reins. Her father had always encouraged her to travel, and study to become a winemaker, spending time in Bordeaux and Bourgogne as well as Australia and South Africa. In 1996, her father passed and she was left in charge. The following years were all but easy with hail, frost, and economic challenges paired with necessary construction expenses, but Delphine persevered. One day, with an employee out on sick leave, her husband David jumped on a tractor and never looked back. They continue to this day making wines together.
They work hard to protect their vineyards, they are certified HVE for High Environmental Values and sustainable viticulture in Champagne - something we do not see very often. They use cover crops and have installed solar panels and rainwater collection systems as they work to be as sustainable as possible.
