Vandal is a very small négociant project focused in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys sub-region. The project was started as a way for three of New Zealand’s best winemakers to experiment with winemaking techniques they don’t often get to use in some of the country’s best growing sites. These innovative winemakers stay incognito under the Vandal name to preserve contracts at their main gigs while stretching their creative muscles. The Vandal wines are always produced in natural styles with minimal intervention, and are unfined and unfiltered. Fruit for these wines comes from vineyard sites that certified SWNZ sustainable with organic practices. The ‘Militia’ Co-Ferment Field Blend is a great example of what Vandal is all about; willingness to just explore and have fun with it. Half of the fruit that goes into the blend (both white and red grapes!) sees a brief period of skin-contact, the fermentation is wild and takes place in barrel before six months of aging.
This unique white wine has a flavor combination that is anything but ordinary. You’ll get tons of tropical and stone fruit notes, exotic spices, some herbal tea texture, and an irresistible freshness.
