Nestled in prime Tuscan real estate and established in the 1970’s, Monte Antico is actually owned by two Americans, Neil and Maria Empson who, and alongside consultant winemaker Frando Bernabei, make top tier blends. Commonly referred to as “Super Tuscans”, these bottlings are a more creative blend, containing robust Cabernet Sauvignon to balance the earthiness of the indigenous Sangiovese. The estate is surrounded by olive groves and forests, adding to the rustic and vegetal notes of the wines. The vineyard area covers 200 hectares in various types of soil, elevation levels and sun exposure, giving depth and a sense of space to each harvested plot. Aging in used Slovenian and large French barrels for 12 - 24 months, softens the edges and lets all the unique flavors meld together for a robust, smooth wine.
Dark cherry compote, anise and leather notes on the nose move into a full bodied wine with rich, red fruit, vanilla and gentle spice all supported by structural tannin and light acid.
