Blend of predominantly Grenache, with some Syrah and Mourvèdre
Led by sisters Catherine and Sophie Armenier, Domaine de Marcoux is producing regionally, timeless wines. Farming about 18 hectares in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and just north, the domaine was a pioneer in organic and biodynamic farming long before it was fashionable. The vineyards are overseen by Catherine with help from Sophie’s son Vincent, they grow primarily old-vine Grenache, with smaller amounts of Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Clairette, and Grenache Blanc. Sophie stewards the cellar, where the wines see short maceration, gentle extraction, and are fermented and aged in stainless steel and concrete tanks. The wines of Domaine de Marcoux are elegant and balanced and showcase the potential for Grenache to be viewed as the “Pinot Noir of the Mediterranean”. Their deceptively humble Côtes du Rhône comprises fruit from two sites just north of the boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Maucoil and Bois Lauzon.
This classic blend is lithe and spicy, with characteristic red berry fruits. The palate is full-bodied and soft, and shockingly easy to drink.
