The phylloxera aphid, which devastated most of the world's Vitis vinifera vineyards in the late 19th century, struggles to survive in certain soil types. The vineyards of the Mosel, particularly around Zeltingen where Selbach-Oster holds land, are characterized by steep, slate-covered slopes. The composition and nature of this slate soil create an environment where the louse cannot establish itself or reproduce effectively, thus the vines are protected.
