Kiona Vineyards and Winery is a pioneering, family-owned operation that played a foundational role in establishing Washington State's Red Mountain AVA. Founded in 1975 by John and Ann Williams along with Jim and Pat Holmes, the estate began as a 10-acre "Old Block" in a then-desolate desert region. Today, the third generation of the Williams family—brothers JJ and Tyler—manages more than 272 acres across five distinct estate sites: Kiona Estate, Heart of the Hill, Ranch at the End of the Road, Sunset Bench, and Artz Vineyard.
As the wine that put this estate on the map, this historic bottling comes from the first commercial Lemberger planting in the United States, established in 1976. Known elsewhere as Blaufränkisch, this variety thrives in the heat of Red Mountain, producing a medium-bodied red that balances the bright acidity of a cool-climate grape with the intense fruit concentration of the high desert. The palate is defined by a vibrant core of black cherry and blueberry, accented by complex notes of white pepper, exotic spices, and a touch of earthiness. With its soft tannins and food-friendly profile, this estate-grown classic is a versatile alternative to Pinot Noir or Syrah, offering a unique piece of Washington viticultural history in every glass.
