Regular price $25.00
100% Pinot Noir
Cap Maritime is a collaboration between owner-winemaker Mark Kent, who fell in love with the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and winemaker Gottfried Mocke. Kent’s maverick spirit and enthusiasm to experiment with the unconventional led him to push for a new style of South African wine. His commitment to quality and detail brought him into partnership with Mocke. Together they’ve helped promote the Cape South Coast origin, working with high quality vineyards in the Elandskloof, Overberg and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge appellations of this unique valley. Mocke’s approach endeavours to create youthful accessibility and accentuate texture and perfume characteristics instead of over-extracted fruit.
The Coastal Pinot Noir grapes were handpicked and sorted prior to a careful selection process to ensure that only the best fruit made it into the tanks. A small portion of the blend is wholecluster fruit, it all sees spontaneous fermentation, and 12 months in French barrique to mature.
The nose gives intense aromas of ripe berry fruit and cloves. The palate shows lots of red fruit (bright cherry, cranberry, fresh red plums) with peppery notes, dark chocolate, and a bit of tobacco. It’s a light bodied wine with vibrant acidity and fine, balanced tannins from the oak aging.
