The Shödl family, Mathias, Viktoria, and Leonhard, make extraordinarily complex wines in a region that is Austria's largest wine growing area, but has a less than stellar image than some others in Austria. However, what the Shödl family makes shows that you should never let your prejudice get in the way of exploration. They follow biodynamic principles and their growing family of sheep help to keep the ground cover in check and hence allows them to farm in a no-till fashion for the most part. They make their own compost as well as spray preparations.
Made from 100% Sankt (Saint) Laurent grown in chalky loam soils on the rolling hills of the Kreuthern vineyards. Somehow feeling complex and easy drinking at the same time, Sankt explores the more earthy side of St Laurent. Bright red berries morph into blackberry and dried cranberry on the palate with a dusty finish.
