León native and Professor of Viticulture & Enology at the University of León, Pedro Mittelbrunn has become the champion of the region's nearly lost native varietals, Prieto Picudo and Albarin. After many years in wine production, Mittelbrunn decided to dedicate his efforts to revive these grapes. His passion led him to convince the region´s best farmers to partner with him and his winery, Leyenda de Paramo, in replanting their plots with Albarin (the region´s white varietal) and Prieto Picudo (the region´s bold red varietal). This energy earned him the nickname, Pedro Prieto Picudo. This pioneering project of modern Prieto Picudo, is the only producer to craft certified organic Prieto Picudo. Leyenda de Paramo prides itself on being an innovator in sustainability and has implemented several energy and water saving techniques. Biodynamic and organic grape growing is central to the winery´s philosophy, as such, a large part of the planted vineyards are certified organic or on their way to being organic. Pedro Mittelbrunn and likeminded winemakers are helping return León to its historical roots as a major wine producing region.
The nose of this rare wine is a complex bouquet of dark berries, black tea, an array of sweet botanicals and dark soil with plenty of subtle smokiness. On the palate the wine is full-bodied with focused depth, fruit forward yet earthy, with firm tannins and excellent balance on the finish.
