Winemaker Scott Frank’s goal is to explore the simpler side of the Willamette Valley. Rather than making burgundian style wines, Bow & Arrow pays homage to the refreshing and decidedly working class wines of France’s Loire Valley. Frank moved from New York in 2001 and worked as a grocery store wine buyer in Portland, dreaming of making wines featuring the lesser sung varietals like Melon, Chenin Blanc, and Gamay. In 2007, Frank joined John Paul of Cameron Winery as his assistant winemaker, and learned the ropes of winemaking from a master of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Then in 2010, Frank was able to branch out on his own with Bow & Arrow. Now a full fledged winery located in Northeast Portland, Frank sources fruit from a small group of farmers who are willing to take the risk of grafting or planing the varieties he needs. Embracing the principles of drinkability and low-intervention, Bow & Arrow makes what they call “humble” wines to be enjoyed daily.
A dry but extracted expression more akin to Savennières rather than say a Vouvray Sec. You’ll find notes notes of green apple, pear, and quince, complemented by floral aromas, honeysuckle, and a distinct minerality with vibrant acidity.
