Winemakers Rodrigo Martins and Pedro Cabanita met at University in Lisboa and became instant friends over their love of terroirs. They started Favonius in 2021; the muse for their project, Favonius, is the name of the Roman God for the western wind that blows off the Atlantic Ocean and is considered the mildest and most favorable of the winds, imparting huge influence on the grapes in this area. Their authenticity and dedication, and “friends turned business partners” story has earned them a great name as Portuguese natural wine innovators. Their wines are made from small plots in and around Armoreira and Alcobaca, both surrounding the Lisboa area and very close to famed massive surfing wave, Nazaré.
‘Curtimenta’ is sourced from vineyards in Bombarral on clay and sandy soils. Hand harvested, destemmed and fermented on the skins in stainless steel. The juice is then lightly pressed before resting in tank without bâttonage for a few months then bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is a beautiful, compelling yet approachable orange wine with floral aromas, mandarin peel bitters, lemon zest and juicy passionfruit with white pepper and subtle tannins on the crisp, dry finish. Pair with strong salted and dried fish or a soft sheep’s milk cheese like Portuguese Serra da Estrela.
