Vincent Roussely is the fourth generation of his family to make wines at this beautiful 8 hectare vineyard site in the heart of Chenonceaux on the Cher River. Vincent has been farming his vineyards by hand, machine, and horse since 2007, and as a result the health of his vines have improved immeasurably, many of which are over 80 years old. The cellar on the property is underground, dug into a tuffeau tunnel underneath the vines, and has been used for the vinification of wine for over 250 years. All ferments are spontaneous and naturally very slow. Vincent’s wines reflect not only a sense of fun, but also his huge sense of social responsibility.
His Canaille (or “scoundrel”) is made from 40 year old Gamay vines and sees partial carbonic maceration during fermentation. Dark strawberry-raspberry nose with fragrant violet scents. These aromas carry over to the palate and mingle with notes of dark cherry and blackberry. The wine is dry with delicate tannins and a lingering mineral acidity. It’s great with a bit of a chill!
