If you aren’t yet familiar with the wines of Washington State, Skyfall Vineyards is a good entry point to this sometimes overlooked region. Scattered throughout the vineyards are massive granite boulders from a distant past, which inspired the winery’s name. The same ancient floods that deposited those boulders created the rich soils that support the vibrant wine growing economy of the Columbia Valley. Third generation grower, Dave Minick, manages the vineyards with environmentally responsible and minimalist interventional practices. Skyfall’s wines are excellent examples of what Washington wines have to offer: rich fruit character balanced by firm tannins thanks to the diurnal temperature shifts of the valley.
The Skyfall Cabernet Sauvignon smells of rich dark fruit, peppery spice, and a hint of cocoa. The palate boasts notes of black currant, blackberry, and wild blueberry with hints of that same cocoa and vanilla. A well balanced wine with good structure and a full body.
