80% Cabernet Franc, 15% Riesling, 3% Petit Manseng, and 2% Vidal Blanc
Lightwell Survey is a Virginia winery shining a new light on the traditional wine-scape. They make small batches of lively reds, dense whites and unique combinations of the two come with no preconceived descriptions or traditional aspirations. Started in the fall of 2015 and continuing to delve into traditional and not so familiar territory. Formed by partners Sebastian Zutant, Ben Jordan, Jay Zutant, Julian Caustrita, and John DeNapoli.
The Riesling, Petit Manseng, and Vidal were picked and directly pressed, after which the fermentation started with ambient yeasts. This fermentation was then added to the Cabernet Franc which was 15% whole cluster and the rest destemmed. This was a very ripe vintage, with low nutrients in the grapes, and the fermentation took much longer than normal, leading to a wine with big fruit, soaring aromatics and a snappy character.
Big, juicy nose balanced by sharp acidity, offering bright red and black fruits, lavender, and white pepper. We're loving this!
