The name Rajat Parr has become synonymous with excellent craft and impeccable taste. Parr’s journey has brought him around the globe, across the fine dining world, and eventually and perhaps most notably into the world of wine production. His partnerships and solo projects in Sandhi, Evening Land Vineyards, Domaine de la Cote, and Phelan Farm have resulted in some of the most respected wines in the domestic market. Since 2020 he has taken a bit of a step back from his old front-facing roles to focus on farming and developing his own systems of natural winemaking. In that time he also began making wines under the ‘Brij’ name: negociant wines from trusted vineyards that are a bit more accessible and no less impressive. The ‘Brij’ wines are an excellent example of the variety, possibilities, and skill that are coming out of this small, often overlooked region of California.
If you’re looking for a red with a bit more gravitas, the ‘Nithya’ is the one for you. An equal parts blend of Malbec and Cabernet Franc, this red is intense and intriguing. The addition of Cabernet Franc makes it very aromatic. Notes of green chilies, tart red fruit, and olive brine jump out of the glass. The palate is dry and a bit grippy with flavors of red plum almost verging on prune. The complex flavors are reminiscent of both a summer fruit galette and savory fajitas on the grill.
