Southern Italy’s ancient winemaking traditions are undergoing a global revival, centered in Campania. In the high-elevation volcanic soils of Irpinia, the Pepe family legacy dates back to the 13th century, but its modern era began in 2005 under Milena Pepe. After studying enology in France, Milena returned at age 25 to lead the estate, overcoming local skepticism and traditional resistance through sheer technical precision. Her rigorous methods—once mocked by neighbors—eventually earned her national acclaim, cementing her as a charismatic leader of the region’s viticultural evolution.
The family’s Vicus label (Latin for "village") focuses on small-production wines that highlight Irpinia’s unique terroir. Their Aglianico, often called the "Nebbiolo of the South," thrives in these high-altitude volcanic soils, producing a profile of power and elegance. To tame the grape’s famously firm tannins while preserving its vibrant fruit character, this wine is aged for two years in neutral vessels. With only 750 cases produced, it stands as a structured, rare expression of one of Italy’s most historic noble grapes.
Aromas of cherry and blackberry with black pepper and cocoa. The palate expresses earthy tannins and a lingering finish recalling wild berries, forest floor, and spice.
